Does Acupuncture Hurt?
In general, acupuncture does not hurt given that the needles used are very fine; anywhere from 0.12 to 0.35 mm in diameter.
Sometimes the patient may experience some sensation upon insertion, although this is rarely uncomfortable. Once in place, the needles are often gently manipulated so as to activate the healing properties of the acupoints. At this stage there are several sensations that may be felt, ranging from a slight aching, to a tingling, numbness, mild sensations of heat or cold or a distending or moving sensation. These are not unpleasant and the specific sensation felt will depend on what the acupuncturist is trying to achieve. Once this stimulation has occurred, a deep relaxation is often experienced and this is seen to be one of the great rewards of an acupuncture session.
